Lady Georgina Kirkpatrick defied her family, jilted her fiancé, and married the man she loved. But when her husband died at Waterloo, she was delivered right back into her father's power . . .
Victory is sweet—but England's triumph was Georgie's rout. Now that she's widowed, the loathsome marriage her father first arranged has simply been renegotiated. With neither money nor rights, and nowhere to flee, all she can do is cherish her last weeks of freedom. . . . Until a band of ruffians overtake her carriage and kidnap her. When she escapes in seaside Brighton and encounters her brother's rather wild friend, Lord St. Just—whom she suspects aspires to be a pirate—she's prepared to entertain more of his adventurous suggestions than usual . . .
St. Just knows his mind and his duty, and he loves a challenge. Helping a fair lady make her farewells to hoodlums suits his talents well. Within the hour he has Georgie, her lady's maid—and her little dog too—sailing for his castle in Cornwall. Meanwhile, the lady's entire family, her kidnappers, and her scheming intended are in pursuit. But as he and the indomitable Georgie grow closer, he begins to suspect that together they will prove a match for them all . . .

Lady Georgina Kirkpatrick has eloped and defied her father once already, but when her husband is killed at Waterloo, she resigns herself to an arranged marriage and sets out for her father's estate. Her journey, however, is intercepted by kidnappers, forcing her upon her escape to take drastic action by petitioning her brother's friend, Robin Kerr, Marquess of St. Just, for assistance. He determines the only way to keep her safe is to ferry her away on his ship. Tight quarters and a lengthy voyage prove the perfect combination for bantering and bickering, and soon sparks fly. Now if only they can manage to thwart the plans of her father and her fiancé. VERDICT Firmly grounded in richly told historical details, this proves a true screwball romantic comedy, perfect for anyone seeking a love story rife with fun and adventure. A successful continuation of Jaxon's "Widow's Club" series (after What a Widow Wants).--Kellie Tilton, Univ. of Cincinnati Blue Ash

She had no choice. Her father threatened to cut her off from her family if she doesn't go through with it. But then Georgie, her dog, and her maid are kidnapped. They manage to escape and end up on a ship owned by Lord St. Just, a friend of her brother's and possibly a pirate. St. Just takes care of her and her companions, and by the time the ship lands near his estate, she and he are in love. But her father and her villainous fianc aren't ready to give her up that easily. A failed elopement attempt, a battle, and even a duel must all be endured before the couple can stay happily together. The nautical details Jaxon provides add drama and flair to this fun romance as her series continues to satisfy with appealing characters, humor, and adventure.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.) -
