ebook

Chögyam Trungpa wrote more than two dozen books on Buddhism and the Shambhala path of warriorship. The Essential Chögyam Trungpa blends excerpts from bestsellers like Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism, Meditation in Action, and other titles into a concise overview of Trungpa's teachings. Forty selections from fourteen different books articulate the secular path of the Shambhala warrior as well as the Buddhist path of meditation and awakening. This "new classic" vividly demonstrates Trungpa's great appreciation of Western culture which, combined with his deep understanding of the Tibetan tradition, makes these teachings uniquely accessible to contemporary readers. It will appeal to beginning students of meditation as well as seasoned readers of Eastern religion.

Ch gyam Trungpa (1940-87), among the first Tibetan Buddhist lamas to bring his teaching to the West and a prolific popularizer of Eastern religion, published numerous volumes of his collected discourses, poetry, and ruminations on art. Here, editor Gimian draws from more than a dozen of Trungpa's works, including one that is forthcoming, in an effort to present "a coherent whole" expressing the essence of his teachings. In this instance, however, stringing together even chapter-length extracts obfuscates rather than clarifies an already enigmatic message. Popular collections needing greater representation of the author can choose from Trungpa's many in-print titles, such as Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, Shambhala, 1995. reprint). All libraries should have something by Trungpa, a lineage holder in the Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism and founder of the Naropa Institute. These excerpts from various works make an excellent choice for those puzzled by their options.
